China has officially rolled out its first high-speed broadband network offering download speeds of 10 Gbps, marking a major leap in consumer internet technology.
The service is currently available in Xiong'an, a rapidly developing district near Beijing. However, according to Chinese tech outlet Mydrivers, the network will soon expand to 168 additional locations across the country.
The system is powered by what’s being called the world’s first 50G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology. It delivers 10 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload speeds, with latency reduced to just 3 milliseconds.
To put this in perspective: downloading a full 4K movie now takes just a few seconds — compared to several minutes on previous networks.
A customer of China Unicom, the operator behind the rollout, reported smooth performance even when multiple smart devices were in use simultaneously. The connection also supported flawless 8K video streaming.
