IndustryAbout 600 testers from Activision have announced the creation of a trade union - making it the largest association of developers in North America.
Around 600 testers from various Activision Blizzard studios have come together to form the Activision Quality Assurance United, affiliated with CWA, the largest labor union in the United States.
With such a sizable membership, the Activision testers' union has become the largest among video game developers in North America, surpassing the ZeniMax employee union, which had around 300 members.
This marks the first union established through an agreement between Microsoft and CWA. Microsoft has voluntarily recognized the union, fulfilling its commitment under the agreement.
The quality control departments at Activision are notorious for being challenging workplaces, with numerous media reports over the years highlighting issues such as constant overwork and minimal pay for employees.
Before the Microsoft agreement, Activision Blizzard actively opposed unionization efforts. For instance, in mid-2022, the company refused to raise the salaries of testers from the Raven studio due to their involvement in union activities.
