Fans are eagerly anticipating the potential release of Grand Theft Auto 6, hoping it will surpass the already iconic previous installments. However, a former Rockstar developer has proposed a contrasting viewpoint, suggesting a more scaled-down map for the upcoming game. The Grand Theft Auto series holds a significant position in gaming, with players eagerly awaiting news about Grand Theft Auto 6 for nearly a decade. Although Rockstar hasn't officially announced anything yet, numerous leaks and rumors, including a significant data breach in September last year, disclosed early video footage of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Since the breach, there has been extensive speculation regarding the plot and setting of Grand Theft Auto 6. Unverified reports suggest the game might introduce two playable protagonists inspired by the real-life criminal pair Bonnie and Clyde, with one potentially being the first female player character in the Grand Theft Auto series. Additionally, it's speculated that Grand Theft Auto 6 might bring players back to Vice City, the fictional Florida metropolis familiar from the much-loved Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and its spin-off, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Expansive urban open-world settings have been a consistent feature of GTA since the PlayStation 2 era, leading players to anticipate that Grand Theft Auto 6 will offer an even more massive playground for criminal escapades. However, former Rockstar Games developer Tony Gowland has a distinct perspective. Speaking to PCGamesN, he expressed his hope that Grand Theft Auto 6 would feature a somewhat smaller and more concentrated game map than its predecessors. "I think a smaller but more densely packed location would maybe bring back some of that memorable navigation that I loved from the original [Grand Theft Auto games]," he stated.

Tony Gowland, currently associated with Dungeon Golf studio Ant Workshop, gained recognition primarily from his work at Rockstar. He contributed to the development of renowned Grand Theft Auto titles such as Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and Chinatown Wars, and was part of the team behind the first Red Dead Redemption. Although now with Ant Workshop, he maintains ties to his past experience at Rockstar.

Expressing his enthusiasm at the prospect of Grand Theft Auto 6 revisiting the Miami-inspired Vice City, Gowland laments that fans' initial glimpse of the upcoming sequel occurred through the notorious data leak from last year.

Rockstar is expected to take a considerable amount of time before providing eager gamers with an official look at Grand Theft Auto 6, despite recent suggestions that the game might possibly debut as early as 2025. Anticipation is notably high for the next chapter in the esteemed yet occasionally controversial Grand Theft Auto series. Gowland believes that a smaller, more intimate game map might be a favorable direction, especially if Grand Theft Auto 6 returns to Vice City.
