Legal Hit to Yuzu: Emulator Creators to Pay $2.4 Million
  • The developers of the Yuzu emulator will compensate Nintendo with a sum of 2.4 million dollars for damages, as revealed in court documents from the ongoing legal case between the two parties.
  • The settlement agreement, reached jointly by Yuzu and Nintendo, puts an end to further litigation. As part of the agreement, Yuzu developers are obligated to comply with Nintendo's requirements.
  • Under the terms of the settlement, Yuzu's creators are prohibited from distributing or selling the emulator and its source code. They are also barred from developing other emulators that circumvent Nintendo's technical protections, with a permanent injunction issued against the company Tropic Haze.
  • Additionally, the creators of Yuzu must cease using all website domains associated with the emulator. Despite the agreement, the official Yuzu website remains operational at the time of writing.
  • Yuzu representatives have yet to provide a comment on the settlement. However, with the development ban in place, it appears unlikely that they will pursue the creation of an emulator for Nintendo's next console, slated for release in 2025.
  • Nintendo initiated legal action against the creators of Yuzu, a popular Nintendo Switch PC emulator, in late February 2024. The company accused Yuzu's creators of, as they claim, employing technology that unlawfully circumvents Switch encryption and facilitates piracy on a massive scale.
