a shop menu with elvish script in dragon's dogma 2

Can you name a duo more perfectly matched than fantasy and elves? Chances are, you'd struggle to find one. So, it comes as no surprise that Dragon's Dogma 2 introduces an entire settlement of elves in the Sacred Arbor, nestled to the northwest of Vernworth. Yet, upon arrival, you might encounter a perplexing hurdle: a lack of familiarity with the Elvish language.

Thankfully, grasping Elvish isn't as daunting as it seems once you uncover the means to acquire it. However, the path to gaining this linguistic skill relies somewhat on chance, and there's no guarantee of immediate fluency when the need arises.

How To Understand Elvish

Upon your initial arrival at the Sacred Arbor, you'll quickly realize that the elves exclusively converse in Elvish, leaving you bewildered by their dialogue and even the text in shop menus, all written in an enigmatic script. To decode this linguistic mystery, your best bet is to enlist the help of a Pawn specializing in Woodland Wordsmithing.

Upon conversing with a Pawn boasting this specialization, they'll promptly inform you of their ability to communicate with elves.

Once you've secured a Pawn adept in Woodland Wordsmithing, the previously cryptic Elvish script accompanying their dialogue seamlessly transitions to the language prevalent throughout the rest of the game, including menus in shops and inns.

Upon locating a suitable Pawn—be it encountered on the road, found within the rift, or via a helpful friend's Pawn ID—it's wise to mark them as a favorite. Capcom's own Pawns maintain their Specializations consistently, making it advantageous to keep them readily accessible in your Favorites list for any future need for Elvish comprehension.

How To Get The Woodland Wordsmith Specialization

Like acquiring other specializations, bestowing the Woodland Wordsmith specialization upon your Pawn hinges on obtaining the appropriate tome. These tomes are typically obtained as gifts from NPCs who hold a high level of affinity for you.

Regrettably, thus far, we've encountered no luck in securing a tome that imparts the knowledge of Woodland Wordsmithing, whether through gifting or as a reliable find within the game world. However, we speculate that Elvish characters, such as Glyndwr and his family, who conveniently offer accessible quests to complete, are the probable sources for acquiring this skill.
